Ecology fashion show
Nov. 2, 1970: Jay Maushardt, 6, of Sherman Oaks, wears a gas mask and plays with his toys during Echo-Action Day Fashion Show at California Mart. Model in a “mother earth” costume walks past.
The event was sponsored by California Prop. 18 supporters – California apparel designers, Eco-Action and Californians Against Smog. Maushardt was wearing the gas mask as part of the anti-smog protest.
Prop. 18 – known as the anti-smog act – would raise revenues on gas tax and license fees to increase pollution controls. It was defeated in the Nov. 3, 1970, election.
This photo by former staff photographer Bill Varie was published in the Nov. 3, 1970, Los Angeles Times.
