Bubbles promotes a movie

Aug. 18, 1981: Bubbles, a 3 ton, 14-year-old elephant, is towed on pontoon water skies through Marina del Rey to promote the movie “Honky Tonk Freeway” in which she performs the stunt. Sharing the ride is her manager Hubert Wells.

Times film critic Sheila Benson wrote in a Aug. 21, 1981, film review:

“Honky Tonk Freeway” (citywide) is laced with characters, observations and a kind of on-the-bias surrealism that make you see why director John Schlesinger might have been drawn to the script. Combined with some exquisitely deft performances, they give the film its few excusable moments. Unfortunately, the joy comes in small amounts and the rest of the film is wasteful and woeful.

The film was pulled from theaters after one week, but is now on DVD.
