In England, more than 50 pilgrims walk with crosses on the final leg of the journey to Holy Island in Berwick-upon-Tweed; in Italy, penitents carry a sculpture of the Virgin Mary during a procession on the southern island of Procida; in Spain, a man prays at one station of the way of the cross or “Via Crucis” during the “Empalaos” procession; and in Indonesia, Catholics participate in a reenactment of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ in Magelang.

Elsewhere, cheese sellers greet the official opening of the cheese market season in the Netherlands; fire rages unchecked an the the Taim Ecological Station in southern Brazil;  and residents of an Indian shanty town fetch drinking water from a tanker in Bhopal.

Add stops in Russia, Germany, and Chile to round out the report.
