Good Friday was observed around the world and included images from England, where pilgrims walked with crosses on the final leg of the journey to Holy Island in Berwick-upon-Tweed. More than 50 people, young and old, celebrated Easter by crossing the tidal causeway during the annual Christian pilgrimage. Penitents carry a sculpture of the Virgin Mary during a procession for Good Friday on the southern island of Procida in Italy; a man prays at one station of the Way of the Cross, or ‘Via Crucis,’ during the procession of the ‘Empalaos’  in Spain; and Indonesian Catholics participate in a reenactment of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ in Magelang. Catholics make up approximately 3% of the population of the predominantly Muslim country.

In Washington this week, the U.S. Supreme Court began debating whether the 130,000 legally married gay couples in this country are entitled to the same benefits under federal law as heterosexual married couples. Complete coverage

Earlier this week in the Southern California desert, Marines from Lima Company, 3rd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment gathered under a camouflage net for a reunion. Ten years ago the Marines were among the first to cross into Iraq to bring down Saddam Hussein.

Afghanistan national army soldiers rolled out a carpet as others stood guard during a ceremony in which Bagram prison was handed over to the Afghanistan government, and demonstrators protested outside the European Union House in Nicosia, Cyprus. A would-be immigrant lays on a stretcher of Spanish emergency services after being rescued off the Spanish coast, near Tarifa. Spanish emergency services rescued three rickety boats carrying 27 sub-Saharan would-be immigrants across the Strait of Gibraltar.

Elsewhere, a man walks among debris of buildings destroyed during ethnic unrest between Buddhists and Muslims in Myanmar; LAPD officers work with a robot at the Beverly Center in Los Angeles after the shopping mall was evacuated when a suspicious package was found in a parking garage; and a man jumps over a bull during the Corralejas festival held in Arjona, Colombia.
