The DiMaggio brothers

The DiMaggio brothers

Aug. 4, 1956: The DiMaggio brothers, from left, Vincent, Joe and Dom, got together to play outfield for the second time in their lives during an old-timers game between former members of the San Francisco Seals and Los Angeles Angels.

A story by writer Frank Finch reported in the Aug. 5, 1956, Los Angeles Times:

Vince DiMaggio smashed a two-run homer and brother Joe singled twice, but the San Francisco heroes of yesteryear were nosed out by the Los Angeles old-timers, 3-2, in a preliminary game to the Angel-Seal contest at Wrigley Field yesterday.…

The three diMags – Dom, Joe and Vince – played the outfield from left to right in that order, but only Vince had a fielding chance, gloving Gilly Cambell’s fly.

Joe got his two singles when Third Sacker Gene Lillard couldn’t flag down his drives; Vince backed Cece Garriott against the center-field wall in the first before clouting his homer in the third with Jim Tobin on base, and Dom grounded out and flied out in his two tries.

A similar photo was published in the Aug. 5, 1956, Los Angeles Times. The photo that was published was moved in the Associated Press wire.

Dom DiMaggio passed away in 2009. His Los Angeles Times obituary Dominic DiMaggio, younger brother of Joe, dies at 92 is online.
