Capturing the world through photography, video and multimedia

Natural light is always celebrated when we arrive at assignments. Getting to fiction writer Jim Gavin's home in Culver City, I was greeted by a great patch of sunlight coming in through his door. Before I set up a strobe, I sat him in that light and made my favorite portrait of the author of "Middle Men," Feb. 4, 2013.

Before his sister joined us, I made some portraits of Jesse Huerta, half of the Latin Grammy Award-winning Mexican pop duo Jesse & Joy, at the Andaz Hotel in West Hollywood, Feb. 5, 2013.

It's always nice to be outdoors when possible, as we are often working in the same hotel rooms multiple times in a week. I was lucky enough to shoot actress Allison Williams, from HBO's "Girls," at the Brentwood Country Mart, Feb. 13, 2013.

Photographing actors from shows I enjoy stirs a mix of emotions. It's hard not to want to meet/photograph the character. Fortunately, I had shot "Parks and Recreation's" Aubrey Plaza before and knew she was hilarious and had heard great things about her costar Chris Pratt. In person, their chemistry was even smoother than on screen, keeping one step ahead of each other and sometimes making it hard for me to shoot I was laughing so hard. Plaza and Pratt were photographed on the set of their NBC show in Studio City, March 7, 2013.

Extreme weather always makes for good photos and I much prefer a nice even light, like fog! Seeing the coast socked in, I started in Hermosa Beach, shot a lone jogger and made my way north, finding a lone surfer riding waves off the Manhattan Beach Pier, March 12, 2013.

On his ABC show "Shark Tank," Kevin O'Leary, a Canadian entrepreneur, venture capitalist, investor and author, is often portrayed as the prickly one of the panel, but he turned out to be very friendly and a huge fan of photography, bringing his Leica M6 film camera with him to the shoot. We talked photography nearly twice as long as our 10-minute photo shoot, in Beverly HIlls, but I couldn't convince him of any of my photography-related inventions. March 24, 2012.

After a tour of his Los Angeles-area home, I felt director Gil Kofman's dining room worked best for its background and color palette, April 16, 2013. I usually shoot with my Canon 24-70mm on one camera body and Canon TS 45mm on a second body and preferred the selective focus of the TS 45mm in this scenario.

On most portrait shoots, I try for one scenario with strobes and one using ambient light, or light already existing in the location. When I arrived to scout the Bar Marmont for my shoot with director Baz Luhrman, I saw this amazing light coming through a skylight and knew I had to sit him here before we were done. In our 10 minutes of shooting we ended up in four locations, three of them using ambient light. Luhrman was photographed in advance of his new film "The Great Gatsby," April 11, 2013.

Not all of my assignments are celebrities and big lighting set-ups. I met Maggie Heim at her home and found two locations for our pictures. As I walked toward the front door to leave, I asked her for one last spot. It's natural light and I liked the way the red of the stained glass played against her scarf. Heim, who was first diagnosed with ovarian cancer in December 2009, had a yearlong remission, but tumors reappeared in her abdomen. Heim, photographed April 16, 2013, is now participating in a drug trial to help battle her cancer.

I had to include a double exposure of crowds in the Do LaB during the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio, April 21, 2013. This was two exposures made in-camera, with a Canon EOS 1-V 35mm film camera.

The Rolling Stones provided one of the best concert-shooting experiences in my 15-plus years of working. We photographers were placed near a runway that Mick Jagger would eventually come out on, past us. The show was at Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles as part of their 50 and Counting tour, May 3, 2013. While I've shot a lot of celebrities and historical figures in my career, it was something special having Mick Jagger a few feet away and have the pictures to prove it.

In covering spot news like fires, photojournalists are subject to much of the same environment as emergency officials, including smoke-filled air and rising temperatures. I had made my way to Glenoaks Boulevard in Glendale near Glenoaks Elementary, where parents were being held while the school was checked by firefighters. Within minutes of arriving, I was hurrying with parents and residents through a mixture of smoke and sunlight as patches of hillside burned next to the 2 Freeway, May 3, 2013.

Certain people catch my eye when I'm on assignment and I have to pull them aside for a portrait. Kim Richardson of Long Beach joined several hundred animal rights activists who gathered in front of the Farmer John facility in Vernon, protesting the slaughter of pigs, May 4, 2013.

Outtakes | Jay L. Clendenin

A photographer may take dozens of shots for an assignment, which are usually edited down to just a few images for use in the newspaper and online. Details and moments significant to the photographer often don’t make the cut. “Outtakes” presents a selection of those images. We welcome comments and discussion.
