Friday’s Pictures in the News begins in Southern California, where the Powerhouse fire has charred more than 1,000 acres. Also in the Southland, Los Angeles County prosecutors file a murder charge against a man whose dogs mauled a woman to death in Littlerock; protesters outside the governor’s L.A. office plead with authorities to allow them to deliver petitions urging a ban on fracking in California; and the Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation presents $23,000 worth of musical instruments to Compton High School’s music program.

In Indonesia, an activist with a painted face participates in a protest in Medan demanding equality for homosexuals and transgenders. In Jakarta, a man smokes a cigarette during a protest by a pro-tobacco group to denounce World No Tobacco Day.

Elsewhere, rail system construction workers mark the breakthrough into the Canary Wharf station in London’s docklands area; a Muslim girl takes part in Friday prayers at Tehran University; and demonstrators flee from a water cannon during a protest against the demolition of a park in Istanbul.
