In Indonesia, an activist with a painted face participates in a protest in Medan demanding equality for homosexuals and transgenders. In Jakarta, a man smokes a cigarette during a protest by a pro-tobacco group to denounce World No Tobacco Day.

Elsewhere, rail system construction workers mark the breakthrough into the Canary Wharf station in London’s docklands area; a Muslim girl takes part in Friday prayers at Tehran University; and demonstrators flee from a water cannon during a protest against the demolition of a park in Istanbul.
