Friday’s Pictures in the News begins at Camp Pendleton, where Marines and Marine families took part in a ceremony dedicating the Operation Enduring Freedom Memorial in the San Mateo Memorial Garden. The memorial was erected to honor the 89 Marines and sailors from the 5th Regiment killed in Afghanistan during the 10-year war.

Central Europe’s worst flooding in over a decade claimed a 12th victim as torrents of muddy water surged down swollen rivers through the Czech Republic and Germany, submerging villages, threatening cities and forcing mass evacuations.

Elsewhere, a street artist attracts attention at Mother Teresa Square in Pristina, Bosnia; sunflowers sprout from an old Volkswagen Beetle in Athens’ Syntagma Square; and instructors walk on students’  stomachs during a bodyguard training session at Genghis Security Academy in Beijing.
