Cuban defector Yasiel Puig breathes life into Dodgers season

Times photographer Wally Skalij photographed Dodgers rookie Yasiel Puig against the Braves at Dodger Stadium. The Dodgers won 2-1 after Puig tied the score with a home run in the sixth inning.

The 22-year-old Cuban defector hit .464 with four home runs and 10 runs batted in during his first week with the team, earning him National League player of the week honors.

Skalij noticed that Puig was very friendly with fans, spending lots of time signing autographs. His generosity might be paying off: The team says it has sold more Puig-related merchandise over a four-day period than any other player in Dodger history – more than Fernando Valenzuela or Hideo Nomo. And the Dodgers have filmed a television commercial that features Puig and Adrian Gonzalez.
