Maybe this month’s best of Southern California Moments photo set should be subtitled “Up!” Images of the sky dominate this month’s selections. First, there’s Diane Trimble’s image of hot-air balloons and their reflections off the surface of Lake Skinner at the Temecula Valley Balloon & Wine Festival. Trimble also gets bonus points for catching what looks like a Smokey the Bear balloon on the left edge of the photo.
There’s also the image of mountaintops peeking out over cloud cover, taken by Chris Goldberg from a flight on its approach to LAX. I love how the sun’s rays are diffused a bit due to the dirty airplane window. Paired with Goldberg’s image, Brendan Holmes’ shot is of an X-shaped streetlight, whose shape is echoed by a plane coming in for a landing at LAX. The two photographs were made on the same day, June 2. One wonders if, by some miracle of chance, Holmes’ photo could have been of Goldberg’s plane.
Another favorite from this month is Colleen Riemer’s image of a classic car, with steps from Kim Yasuda’s “Ascent” advancing toward the foreground and out of the frame. “Ascent” includes 31 bronze shoes ascending in a spiral, around the parking garage stairway — there’s the sky theme again!
The month’s set comes back to earth on a somber note with Michael Ares’ image of a child walking through the crosses of “Arlington West” on the beach in Santa Monica.
We’ve been breaking temperature records lately, but don’t let that keep you from making pictures. See you next month.
