'Miss Beautiful Ape' contest

‘Miss Beautiful Ape’ contest

June 1972: Radio and TV personality Gary Owens runs the “Miss Beautiful Ape” contest in Century City that coincides with the release of “Conquest of the Planet of the Apes,” the fourth movie in the “Planet of the Apes” series. The winner, Dominique Green, contestant No. 2, won a role in the future “Battle for the Planet of the Apes,” the fifth movie in the series.

This photo by former staff photographer Larry Bessel was published in the June 14, 1972 Los Angeles Times. Right below this stand-alone photo was staff writer Kevin Thomas’ movie review of “Conquest.”

Thomas wrote:

Each time producer Arthur J. Jacobs has made one of his highly popular “Apes” films he has been prepared to consider it the last.

But each one has been so successful it demanded still another installment, taxing the ingenuity of Jacobs’ gifted writer Paul Dehn.

Every time, however, Dehn has met the challenge extraordinarily well. That “Conquest of the Planet of the Apes” (at the Egyptian, UA Westwood and Centinela Drive-In) is actually the fourth in the series is awe-inspiring, for the films on the whole have been remarkably consistent in quality. Indeed, No. 4 may well be the best since No. 1, “Planet of the Apes.”….

The 1973 film “Battle for the Planet of the Apes” was the last of the original five “Ape” movies. A remake of the original “Planet of the Apes” was released in 2001 followed by “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” in 2011.
