Sony's new QX100 and QX10 camera lenses connect to your smartphone

Sony’s new QX100 and QX10 camera lenses connect to your smartphone

The smartphone camera versus the compact point-and-shoot camera: a battle, which has become an uphill battle, for the conventional camera companies. Sony seems to have discovered the solution: Combine the two.

Though there are plenty of add-on gizmos and gadgets that connect an assortment of lenses onto your smartphone, the new Sony Cyber-shot QX100 and QX10 camera lens introduced today, syncs wirelessly with your phone via WiFi or NFC, raises the bar to producing high-quality images. The lens cameras are controlled by the Android or iOS (iPhone) PlayMemories Mobile app to control the shutter, focus and allow viewing the image through your smartphone.

QX10_White-300pxIt’s really a circular-shaped camera without the viewing screen and shutter controls, which can be attached to the phone to give you a more conventional feel or can be hand-held away from the phone for a variety of angles.

Sony’s ingenuity should make this a hot seller around the holidays. It’s expected to arrive later this month in  black and  white versions. There have been plenty of wide angle and macro options like the olloclip, which I reviewed earlier.

Even though the quality of smartphone camera has improved tremendously, you’re not going to compete in terms of  quality. The Cyber-shot QX lenses are going to give you a lot of quality because you’re shooting your image onto a much bigger sensor and using optical zoom.

With the QX100 you’re going to be using the same sensor feature as in the Sony RX100-II, which is one of my top choices for my next compact point-and-shoot. The QX100 is listed to sell for $500.

QX10a-375pxThe QX10 version features a much longer 10x optical lens, but a smaller sensor and will sell for $250. I’m guessing this lower price and  longer zoom lens on this model will make it the more popular consumer product.

The images are recorded both on the camera lens micro sd card or Memory Stick micro and your phone. This gives you the option to use any of your favorite apps for processing and social media.

Stats include:

WiFi and NFC connectivity via Sony’s PlayMemories Mobile app, Optical SteadyShot image stabilization

Also, introduced today by Sony is the Action Cam HDR-AS30V. The camera is smaller, features GPS and has a much higher quality 11.9-megapixel still photo image than their previous POV (point-of-view) model. The camera will have a retail price of $299.99. It connects to your smart phone via WiFi or NFC using Sony PlayMemories app, giving you a live video view. The camera includes waterproof housing with a standard tripod mount.

Hmm, technology is running so fast. But it looks functional and practical.

Neat device, but a poorly written article. The headline and first reading of the article give the impression this Sony circular camera works with "your" smartphone — as though there is a way to attach it to my iPhone5. Re-reading the article, I thought the Sony is itself a new smartphone with a camera attachment. And reading it a third time, I wonder if the thing that looks like a smartphone in the phone is really a case that clips onto an iPhone or other smart phone. So, Mr. Lachman: WHICH IS IT?

Its the best deal. Now don't need to pick your DSLR or other equipment with you. Now you can simply go with it and it will deliver the best.
