Los Angeles Times’ images of President Kennedy [updated]

John F. Kennedy, the 35th president of the United States, was assassinated on Nov. 22, 1963, in Dallas.

Starting in the 1950s, Kennedy, a Democrat from Massachusetts, often visited Los Angeles. His sister Patricia was married to actor Peter Lawford.

Two of the Los Angeles Times’ most popular JFK images – Bill Murphy’s 1958 portrait and Bill Beebe’s 1962 Kennedy takes a swim – were taken at or near the Lawfords’ Santa Monica home.

In addition, the 1960 Democratic National Convention, where Kennedy was nominated for president, was in Los Angeles.

This photo gallery consists of images taken by Los Angeles Times photographers of Kennedy’s many visits to Southern California.

When he was running for office he was driven through parts of Burbank, including down my street, in a bright red convertible. The street was lined with my neighbors and everyone was waving in return to his waves. A long ago but not forgotten memory.
