Pictures in the News | Dec. 12, 2013

In Thursday’s Pictures in the News, skyscrapers poke out of London’s famous fog in an aerial photo by the Metropolitan Police.

Pretoria, South Africa: Mourners line up to pay respects to Nelson Mandela, the revered icon of the anti-apartheid struggle in South Africa and one of the towering political figures of the 20th century, who died in Johannesburg on Dec. 5 at age 95.

Jerusalem: Ultra orthodox Jews walk past the Damascus gate outside Jerusalem’s old city in Israel. A heavy winter storm hit much of the region  Wednesday evening into Thursday, forcing the closure of roads and schools while covering widespread areas with snow and ice.

Kiev, Ukraine: Pro-European Union activists warm themselves near a fire and guard barricades on the main street Khreschatyk. Ukraine was thrown into crisis last month when President Viktor Yanukovych suddenly backed away from a long-awaited political and economic agreement with the European Union, deciding to focus instead on restoring trade ties with Russia.

And there’s more from around the world.
