"L.A. never rains! But when it does there will be magic in the air and chaos on the roads," says Howard Fang, who shot this image.

Reader photos: Best of Southern California moments for November 2013

November brings fun photos from Halloween and Dia de los Muertos celebrations. Costume images often have a surreal feel, and we start off with two of those, showing first a Hello Kitty trick-or-treater in Pacific Palisades, then an elaborately costumed dancer with L.A. City Hall looming in the background.

The upside of wetter weather: more rainy-day images. I love the quiet solitude in Aaron Leroux’s photo of a puddle-lined Route 66 near Barstow, as well as Howard Fang’s image of an umbrella’s shadow surrounded by rain drops.

We end this month’s set with a two-image ode to Los Angeles. Despite the attention devoted lately to bike lanes and mass transit, there remains a certain romance associated with driving around L.A. at night. It helps when you’re in a classic 1969 Chevelle Malibu, as Armin Adams was in his image. It makes me wonder what was playing on the radio. Appropriately enough, the set ends at the ocean, on the Santa Monica Pier, with Brent Goldman’s image framing roller coaster cars racing by, a spinning ride and the Ferris wheel overhead.

Feel like there’s a photo I left out, or one that doesn’t belong in the set? Sound off in the comments. See you next month.
