Today we have a special Christmas edition of Pictures in the News with traditional and offbeat celebrations from around the globe.

Vatican City: Pope Francis delivers his “Urbi et Orbi” (to the City and to the World) message from the central balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica. Pope Francis prays for a better world, with peace for the land of Jesus’ birth, for Syria and Africa as well as for the dignity of migrants and refugees fleeing misery and conflict.

Belarus:  Actors portray Joseph and Mary at a Nativity re-creation in Minsk.

Madagascar: Father Christmas walks in a dusty street of Ambohibary, greeting children.

Some of the offbeat celebrations include the Berlin Seals swim association’s traditional Christmas Swim in the Orankesee. And in Barcelona, about 400 people gather for the 104th edition of the Christmas Cup 200-meter swimming race in the old harbor.

Philippines: People visit loved one’s graves outside a Catholic church, site of a mass grave in the typhoon-devastated village of San Joaquin.

Add stops in the Afghanistan, Jordan, Bethlehem, India, Romania and England to round out the report.
