They met on skid row, returned for their wedding

Family, friends and skid row residents gathered in San Julian Park in downtown Los Angeles on Valentine’s Day to celebrate a wedding of their own. Leonora McAfee,32, and Mack Turnage,32, married in the park where they met years earlier, at the corner of 5th and San Julian streets.

The park, they said, had special meaning to them. McAfee was homeless with her children when she arrived in the area in 2004. Then she met Turnage. On Friday, McAfee got ready for the couple’s wedding in an SRO Housing building near the park. She walked down San Julian Street dressed in a white wedding gown and escorted by her longtime friend, Black Gardy, 56, of Pasadena, as residents and celebrants followed.
