Locke was settled in the early 20th century by Chinese immigrants who built homes and businesses on land leased from a white man because they were barred from owning property. The town retains its Chinese flavor even as the number of residents of Chinese descent has dwindled to only about 10 people. It is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
