Come to the L.A. Times printing plant for an InstaMeet

Into Instagram? Following @latimesphotos? Curious about how the newspaper is printed?   Then come join me — @rickloomis — at the Los Angeles Times’ Olympic Boulevard printing plant on Friday at 1 p.m. for a behind-the-scenes tour of the presses in action and an opportunity to photograph this unique process.

I’ve been a photojournalist with the Times for 20 years, but am still amazed by the process of getting the news from the gathering point to and through the presses and onto your doorstep by the time you wake up each morning.  When I was asked to take part in this InstaMeet, I shot some images of the presses in operation.

If you are interested in attending, register online now as space for the tour is limited.

I hope to see you there!  And check out @latimesphotos, our official photography and video team feed.

Wish I was in CA for this. I fell in love with printing in High School (1969-72.) I learned to set type, operate Pilot and Heidelberg presses, then photo offset. AB Dick, Multi-Lith, shooting half-tones with a screen in the copy camera. Two-part lith developer, stripping negatives, red opaque. Wow the memories! Later in life, after a career as a photographer I became a newsprint magazine publisher – loved going to the plant and watching my own creations on the press!
