Irbil, Iraq: Refugees fleeing from Mosul head to the self-ruled northern Kurdish region in Irbil north of Baghdad. The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, the Al Qaeda breakaway group, on Monday and Tuesday took over much of Mosul in Iraq and then swept into the city of Tikrit farther south. An estimated half a million residents fled Mosul, an economically important city.
