Harry was only trying to help!

Harry was only trying to help!

The original July 31, 1978, Los Angeles Times caption reported:

First base umpire Harry Wendelstedt is sent sprawling by St Louis’ Wayne Garret, who was tagged out by San Diego’s Gene Tenace in fifth inning Sunday. Garrett was trying to score on Lou Brock’s double. Wendelstedt was just trying to help plate umpire Ed Montague make call.

Two photographers for the Los Angeles Times’ San Diego edition were covering the game — and both got the same play. Andy Hayt’s image is on the left, John McDonough’s is on the right.

These two photos were published in the July 31, 1978, Los Angeles Times. The Padres won the game, 3-2.
