Steve Martin wins Grammy

Feb. 23, 1978: Steve Martin poses for photographers backstage after winning a Grammy Award.

In the Feb. 25, 1978, Los Angeles Times, Robert Hilburn wrote on Martin’s win:

After some good-natured gestures for photographers, Steve Martin struck a serious pose backstage. Honored for the year’s comedy album, Martin said he felt much of his success is tied to the times.

“People are more receptive to my kind of comedy now,” he said. “In the late ’60s and early ’70s, things were more specialized. Everyone was so worried about whether something was ‘hip’ or not. Everything was tied to drug references and such.

“For all the revolutionary aura of the ’60s, it was almost a conservative time. Strangely, people are looser now. They’re freer to be themselves and get away from formal attitudes about what is ‘in’ and what is OK to like.”…

The Grammy Awards in 1978 were held at the Shrine Auditorium. Martin won his award for best comedy album for “Let’s Get Small.”
