Friday’s Pictures in the News begins off the Southern California coast on Catalina Island, where the waves created days earlier by Hurricane Marie off the coast of Baja California tore apart piers, shoved boats on land, created sinkholes, ripped away pieces of a sea wall and sent boulders tumbling to the shoreline. Story

Gaza City: Palestinian women watch as a little girl gets help stepping off a push cart at a park in downtown Gaza City one day after an unconditional ceasefire was signed between Hamas and Israel.

Barcelona: Runners take part in the Discovery Underground Barcelona 2014, a unique running event taking place inside the underground between the stations before the opening hours of the Metro’s service.

Kokopo, Papua New Guinea: Mount Tavurvur erupts, spewing rocks and ash into the air, forcing the evacuation of local communities and international flights to be re-routed.

Anaheim: Angels second baseman Howie Kendrick celebrates with teammates after hitting a sacrifice fly that allowed a teammate to score the winning run against the A’s in the 10th inning at Angel Stadium.

Add stops in London, Switzerland, Afghanistan and Ukraine to round out the report.
