Accident leaves car sitting on guardrail

Oct. 3, 1962: Martha Sue McCown, 18, checks out the damage after an accident left her carĀ sitting on a guardrail.

A story in the Oct. 4, 1962 Los Angeles Times explained:

Traffic on the inbound Santa Ana Freeway near the Long Beach Freeway on-ramp to Pasadena was tied up nearly an hour Wednesday when a car hit a safety island and caromed onto guard rails.

Miss Martha Sue McCown, 18, of Norwalk, told police she attempted to keep from going up the on-ramp and hit the safety island. Her car then skidded 120 ft., jumped onto the guard rail and finally stopped with all four wheels off the pavement.

Miss McCown and a passenger, Dolores Davis, 19, of Norwalk, were not injured.
