Turin, Italy: Firefighters march during an eight-hour strike called by unions to protest the controversial Jobs Act, which they say threatens workers’ rights.

Oslo: Malala Yousafzai reacts to being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.  The prize is being shared between Yousafzai, the 17-year-old Taliban attack survivor and the youngest Nobel Prize winner ever, and Indian children’s rights activist Satyarthi.

Jakarta, Indonesia: A diver swims around a wreck believed to be a German submarine that sank during World War II in the Java Sea.

Tuesday’s Pictures in the News begins in Berkeley, where protesters rallying against police violence blocked Interstate 80. As many as 1,500 people took part in the demonstration, and arrests rose to 159 as protests turned violent for a third night in a row.
