In Monday’s Pictures in the News, investigators recover a rifle found in the 6200 block of South Hoover Street just north of 62nd Place in South Los Angeles, near where two LAPD officers responding to a call received gunfire. Neither officer was injured, but several shell casings and other evidence were found in the street after the apparent ambush.

South Los Angeles: Civil-rights leaders gather at the corner of 65th Street and Broadway, the site of the LAPD’s fatal shooting of Ezell Ford in August. The results of Ford’s autopsy are to be released Monday.

Albania: Members of the Marina Militare Italiana rescue passengers from the burning ferry Norman Atlantic that is adrift in the Adriatic Sea. Desperate passengers pleaded live on TV to be saved from the burning ferry as rescuers battled gale-force winds and billowing smoke to reach them.

Java Sea: The search for the missing AirAsia passenger jet continues. Multinational teams searched for any sign of the AirAsia plane missing off Indonesia with 162 people on board, but one top official warned it was likely at the bottom of the sea.

And there’s more from around the world.
