Pictures of the Year International competition

Top prizes in the 72nd Pictures of the Year International photojournalism contest went to photographers for the New York Times and the Commercial Appeal.

Daniel Berehulak, a freelancer for the New York Times, won photographer of the year and Brad Vest of the Commercial Appeal in Memphis, Tenn., was named newspaper photographer of the year.

Los Angeles Times photographers Rick Loomis and Michael Robinson Chavez received awards of excellence for photographer of the year. Robinson Chavez also received second place newspaper photographer of the year.

The Los Angeles Times picture editing staff was awarded first place in Editing Portfolio-Newspapers and was also named a finalist for Best Publication.

Other Times photographers, editors and video journalists received 13 awards in various categories.
