1963 sit-in at the Federal Building

Aug. 28, 1963: Demonstrators during a sit-in at the Federal Building in Los Angeles.

This sit-in, organized by Congress on Racial Equality (CORE), was part of local support for the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom in Washington, D.C. During the Washington march,  the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. gave his “I Have a Dream” speech. About 5,000 people marched in Los Angeles.
