CHP arrest demonstration
April 12, 1978: As students watch, California Highway Patrol officers point guns at “fugitives” during a demonstration of the CHP’s pursuit, apprehension, disarming and arrest technicques.
These three photos by staff photographer Rick Meyer were published in the April 13, 1978, Los Angeles Times. The accompanying text block reported:
They’d seen it all before, of course…on television.
But there was an added dimension of near reality to the pursuit, apprehension, disarming and arrest of fugitives for 600 senior and junior high school students who watched them at the Dodger Stadium parking lot Wednesday.
The California Highway Patrol staged it all as part of the school’s “Education for Law and Justice” project, sponsored by the Constitutional Rights Foundation.
And the youngsters noticed the difference right away:
This time, no commercials. …
