Photographers covering the Golden Apple Awards
Dec. 11, 1977: Photographers covering arrivals at the Hollywood Women’s Press Club’s Golden Apple Awards.
At the awards ceremonies, Jane Fonda and Frank Sinatra were named stars of the year. John Denver and Kathleen Quinlan were named new stars of the year.
In the Dec. 12, 1977 Los Angeles Times, Jennings Parrott wrote in the Newsmakers column:
Jane Fonda, one-time recipient of the Hollywood Women’s Press Club Sour Apple awards because of its belief that her anti-Vietnam war campaigning reflected unfavorable on Hollywood, received the club’s top award as Female Star of the Year. Miss Fonda, 39, was given a standing ovation at a gathering in a Beverly Hills hotel. That noted Hollywood political conservative, John Wayne, a friend of her father, laughed as he handed Miss Fonda her Golden Apple prize for her role in “Julia.” “I’m surprised to find you on the right of me,” he said.
The Golden Apple Awards were last given in 2001. The Hollywood Women’s Press Club is inactive.
