July 4, 1947: Three lanes of traffic at the Arch Rock entrance to Yosemite National Park.

This photo was published in the Jan. 2, 1948 Los Angeles Times Midwinter Edition. The original caption added, “By using three lanes, vacationists were admitted without delay even on peak travel periods such as Memorial Day and the Fourth of July.”

This image was part of a photo layout reporting record numbers of tourists in 1947, “More than 3,100,000 persons visited the beaches, valleys, deserts and mountains of the southern counties playground,” of Southern California.
