1967: PeopleMover opens at Disneyland

June 28, 1967: The PeopleMover is run through a remodeled Tomorrowland during press preview of the new Disneyland attraction.

This photo by staff photographer Steve Fontanini was published in the June 29, 1967 Los Angeles Times. An accompanying article by Auto Editor Bob Thomas reported:

Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. demonstrated Wednesday that it may be working at cross-purposes with itself – that if, infringing on the market for its primary product, the automobile tire – with a new transportation concept.

And it happened in the fantasy atmosphere of Disneyland.

Nevertheless, the nation’s No. 1 tire producer Wednesday previewed a new and very tangible automated transportation system, the PeopleMover, that offers potential for relieving traffic congestion in major cities … at the expense of the automobile.  …

The Disneyland PeopleMover involves 62 four-car trains that are propelled at speeds from 1  1/2 to 7 mph by electric motor-powered rubber wheels which protrude from an elevated “glideway.” Each car carries four passengers, providing an hourly capacity of 4,885. …

The PeopleMover opened on July 2, 1967. The three-fourths-mile course traveled through many of the pavilions in the remodeled Tomorrowland. The PeopleMover was closed in 1995.
