This photo appeared in the Aug. 18, 1966, Los Angeles Times. The accompanying story by Jack Jones began:

“Significant progress has been made on all but a few of the recommendations” made by the McCone Commission, Gov. Brown was told Wednesday …

The 49-page inventory was compiled by a specially assembled crew of investigators and presented to Brown in the backyard of the latter’s Los Angeles residence.

McCone noted, in a letter of transmittal signed by himself and Vice Chairman Warren Christopher, that “there has been no major disturbance this summer in the south-central area of Los Angeles.

“Nevertheless, tension has continued to be high…”
