Riot police spray Lebanese activists with water cannons during a protest against an ongoing trash crisis in downtown Beirut on Wednesday. Lebanon's health minister says the country is on the brink of a "major health disaster" unless an immediate solution is found for its mounting trash problem. Garbage has been collecting on the streets in Lebanon for the last month amid government paralysis and inability to agree on a solution after Beirut's main landfill was shut down.

Firefighters hose down the collapsed east side of the Motel 6 in Bremerton, Wash., on Wednesday morning. A gas explosion leveled the building Tuesday evening. The blast critically injured a gas company worker minutes after the acting hotel manager had evacuated the building due to a gas leak.
