An 1886 photograph of Spring Street looking north from 1st Street.

This photo was published in the Dec. 4, 1931, Los Angeles Times as part of the newspaper’s 50th anniversary celebration. From the caption:

The principal points of interest are indicated by number, as follows:

1 – The Peoples store, torn down the next year to make space for the Phillips Block.

5 – Oddfellows Hall.

13 – Old council chamber used up to 1885. The tower is that of the old 20 engine house. Both torn down to build the Phillips Block in 1887.

14 – The Baker Block.

15-The Schumacher Block.

16-Corner of 1st and Spring.
