This photo accompanied a story in the Dec. 2, 1952, Los Angeles Times:
More than 3,000 braved the rain last night to watch the opening of Skating in the Park at Pershing Square which featured an ice-skating Santa Claus and a host of professional and amateur skaters.
After a tour around the park in a dog sled, drawn by a team of five white Samoyeds, Santa was delivered rinkside where he was greeted by Betty Hart, the “Ice Maid.” …
A bit of impromptu comedy was added by City Councilmen Harold Harby and Ernest Debs, who put on skates and assisted by Santa and Miss Hart managed to “ankle” around the rink.
The Holiday Ice Rink in Pershing Square opened on Nov. 12 this year, and is open until Jan. 18, 2016. More information is at the Los Angeles Parks website.
