Dust storm for ‘Poltergeist II’

The caption with this photo in the May 29, 1985, Los Angeles Times reported:

Chatsworth was struck by a dust and windstorm Tuesday but it was caused by man, not Mother Nature, and the afflicted homes were fakes. A special-effects crew worked its magic with a giant fan and shovels of dirt during filming of “Poltergeist II,” using a set constructed at the corner of Variel Avenue and Celtic Street.

“Poltergeist II: The Other Side,” was released in 1986. The sequel to “Poltergeist” was nominated for the Academy Award for visual effects. “Aliens” won the award.
