This photo by John Malmin appeared in the Nov. 29, 1970 Los Angeles Times. California was in the midst of an economic downturn. The caption reported that “analysts fear a prolonged slump could prompt many to seek property elsewhere.”

California economy and population continued to grow. The population grew from 19.97 million in 1970 to 20.35 million in 1971.
