Ricardo DeAratanha

Ricardo DeAratanha has been on The  Times photo staff since 1989. Born in Rio de Janeiro, DeAratanha attended the College of Communication in São Paulo, Brazil. He landed a job as studio assistant at Editora Abril, a major studio and publishing company in São Paulo. He freelanced while traveling the world before settling in the United States. During his travels, DeAratanha joined the Image Bank, a stock photography organization.

He has won two second-place awards and an honorable mention in Nikon Photo Contests International. He participated in several book projects: “A Day in the Life of California,” “A Day in the Life of Italy,” “The Jews in America,” “One Earth” and “In Pursuit of Ideas.” He is also a Pulitzer winner of team photojournalism covering several breaking news events in Southern California, including the Los Angeles riots in 1992, the Northridge earthquake in 1994 and the North Hollywood bank shootout in 1997.
