Rick Loomis
Rick Loomis has worked for the Los Angeles Times since he graduated from Western Kentucky University in 1994 with a bachelor’s degree in photojournalism and a minor in Latin American studies. His work has been recognized on numerous occasions, but he is most proud of being awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 2007.
He is based in Los Angeles and has covered assignments in more than 25 countries, spending more than two years in Iraq and Afghanistan alone.
He has been an avid scuba diver since he was 15 and enjoys rock climbing, hiking, boating and anything else he can do in the great outdoors. If he can combine those loves and skills with photojournalism, that’s even better. Although much of his work involves coverage of war and the environment, he finds all types of photography gratifying.
Loomis is a frequent guest lecturer, speaking at places such as UC Berkeley, USC’s Annenberg School of Journalism, Ohio University’s School of Visual Communication, San Jose State University, Northern Arizona University, Elon University and Western Kentucky University. His work has been exhibited at the Annenberg Space for Photography, the Smithsonian Institute, the Stephen Cohen Gallery, the Chiostro di Voltorre Gallery (Varese, Italy) and the Perfect Exposure Gallery.
