Wally Skalij

Wally Skalij joined The Times in 1997. He previously worked at the Daily Breeze in Torrance.

Back in high school, Skalij, a Lakers fan, went to his first game at the Forum, sitting way at the top watching Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, James Worthy, Michael Cooper, Kurt Rambis and other great players. He says he remembers paying more attention to the photographers than to the actual game.

“That day changed my life,” Skalij recalls. “As a kid I always fantasized about being an athlete in every sport and hitting the game-winning shot in the NBA Championship or hitting the home run that would win the World Series for our team.”

“I guess I’m an adrenaline junkie, and realizing if I can’t be the athlete, why not get as close as possible to it.”  He went on to pursue photojournalism.
